The reason I am writing this blog is because I am in a series entitled “All About the Benjamins” at the Equation Church this month! While studying & preparing for this series I ran across some interesting facts that made me dig a lot deeper into Scripture! I am believe it is my responsibility as Pastor to give the people the entire counsel of the Word of God & not just my doctrine and/or personal beliefs. I am to be an apologist for Scripture and preach it with sincerity & integrity. I have been taught – You don’t tell the Bible what to believe, you let the Bible tell YOU what to believe!

So that everyone is aware, I don’t have a vendetta against Tithing and/or giving to the Church! I TITHE & GIVE myself! However, I believe that the prosperity gospel has gotten out of hand & has become a big deterrent to people coming to church. So as I share with you my thoughts on Malachi 3closeMalachi 3

: 37-39. This describes the process in which the Levites would collect the tithe from the Israelites. They would first take the tithe and then they would bring 1/10th of the tithes brought to them, up to the storehouse. In verse 39 it says that the children of Israel and the Levites would bring the tithes to the storehouse. So, my point is, whenever the bible says, “Bring tithes into the storehouse” it doesn’t necessarily mean the people. It could mean the Levites and/or priests.

So who was robbing God? Could it have been the priests? Well, it wouldn’t have been the first time. , you’ll see what I mean. You see, a few priests were always put in charge of the storerooms. It was the job of those priests to distribute the tithe to all of the rest of the priests and Levites. In this case, the priest Eliashib was in charge. He was crooked, and he had formed a partnership with Tobiah. Tobiah was an Ammonite.
Eliashib was giving Tobiah some of the Levite priests’ tithe, so the Levites had to go out into the fields and work in order to survive. More trustworthy priests had to be put in charge of the storeroom. This is an example of robbery by a priest.

, “If YE will not hear, and if YE will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon YOU, and I will curse YOUR blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because YE do not lay it to heart.” God had ALREADY told the priests that the curse was because of their doing!

It was the priests who were robbing the tithe. God said to them, “YE have robbed me, even this whole nation.” Even the nation was suffering under the curse due to the actions of the priests. So, God’s message to the priests was this. Bring ALL the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in MY house. If you do this, I will then free the nation of the curse, by letting it rain and ending the drought.

Why would God be talking to the priest the entire book of Malachi, and then suddenly in chapter 3 and verse 8, start talking to everyone? And what does the word rob mean? Does it mean not to give what is owed? Or does it mean to take what has already been begotten? How did we reach a point were we read this and assumed that God was talking to the nation of people? Check some of the later translations of the Bible and you may see. So, why is our nation so broke? Maybe it’s because the priests that are in charge of the storeroom are stealing the tithe.

Let me stop here to say this. I am not trying to bash churches or preachers. You have to understand that preachers go to school to become preachers. In most cases, they teach what they have been taught. So I believe that most preachers have good intentions (with respect to tithing).

The tithe was set up for the Israelites under the Mosaic law. All Christians should know what I am about to write by now. We are not under the Mosaic law anymore! Jesus fulfilled (or accomplished) the law, when He died on the cross! The Old Covenant was passed away and has been replaced with the New Covenant (Luke 18:31-34closeLuke 18:31-34

: 42-47. You see, in this Church, there was no such thing as a person in church that was in need. People sold their possessions and divided them amongst everybody! Since they were all priests, they all got their cut. So the people that were in need were not giving, they were receiving!

Hermeneutics – The art of biblical interpretation
Ask Questions of the Text – Who, What, When, Where, Why?
What I believe in one area will affect what I believe in another! Challenge what I believe in the light of Scripture!
Read the words, but ask THE WORD (JESUS) what He is saying! Revelation is only given to those with a pure heart!

Hey all, forgive me for not blogging in a while, but today the Equation Church hit a Major Milestone! Our church, which launched Easter Sunday, April 24th, as of today broke the 100 membership barrier! WooHoo!!!

I absolutely know that it’s not about numbers, but this is a milestone that I believe we should celebrate!

The powerful thing about this is that we hit this mark before our six-month anniversary! Maybe we can double in another six months!

For my fellow pastors & church planters – keep pressing! If God can do this for us in a short amount of time, I know he can do it for your ministry. I’m rooting for you.

The Equation Church team – you guys are amazing & I am a blessed guy to have you all on my team! Let’s keep winning people to Jesus!

Until next time,
Love God. Help People. Change the World!

I believe the more honest I am about what I did & do wrong God will give me the grace to overcome. First Mistake – Listening to people
Read more

Some Pastors have made you believe that they have not done anything wrong while starting a church or currently pastoring a church, but I’m not that guy! I believe the more honest I am about what I did & do wrong God will give me the grace to overcome.

First Mistake – Listening to people instead of being led by the vision God gave me.

The first location we started having our DNA bible studies was picked because someone on the team at the time said they would pay half the rent if we held it there. Well, needless to say I didn’t want to meet there because it wasn’t in our demographic, but I went ahead with it anyway. That same person left the church two weeks later & we were stuck at that location for 6 months. I learned a lesson to stop listening to the promises of people & go where God told me to go!

Second Mistake – I’m a tremendous people pleaser.

Don’t get me wrong, the Equation Church is doing some amazing things, but I believe that we could be a lot farther if I wouldn’t have been such a people pleaser. Not wanting to hurt feelings, not asking for things that we really needed, or asking for a deeper level of commitment from people on the team. I’ve learned – You have not, because you ask not!

Third Mistake – I neglected my family!

Yes the cardinal mistake! Don’t act like I’m the only one who has done this! I got so busy with the church that I didn’t spend a lot of time with my family or even time for myself for that matter. The demands of ministry sometimes overwhelmed me & it took off so fast that I couldn’t manage it at times. I am learning to slow down, stop trying to control everything, & allow the church to be number 2 in my life & not number 1. I have to learn to let Christ build His church & not me.

Ok that’s enough confessing for the night! I have more that I will share!

Love God. Help People. Change the World!

I received a message in my Facebook inbox from a gentleman who apparently has an issue with some of my preaching. He proceeded to call me a “Pimp Dictator Preacher” from looking at some of my messages on our Equation Church Youtube page – namely the Armor Bearer Workshop I did at Faith Miracle Temple.

Can I be real? I was actually a little flattered! Forgive me for not being upset, but if someone took that much time to gather a negative opinion of me from watching a 5 min clip maybe I’m not the crazy one after all! LOL! As one of my favorite preacher ladies says, “New Levels – New Devils!” I like to say “When you seek to be greater – be prepared to hear from your haters!”

Take a different look at your Haters! They are a good sign for you that you are heading in a direction —–> Prayerfully the right direction! I took the opportunity to examine my heart & my preaching to ensure that I was not a “Pimp Dictator Preacher” instead of getting mad & defensive that someone attacked me. Have you ever had someone attack you falsely? I would love to hear how you handled it!

BTW – I looked over and asked my wife, “Did you know you were married to a PIMP???” Hahahaha!

I believe Pastors (other than parents) are the most lied too people on the planet. People tell you they will be there at a certain time, but they always end up late. They tell you that they love your preaching, but sleep through most of your messages (not my church ), they tell you they will be at your church forever and they end up leaving and attending the church right down the street.

I often wondered why some of the older pastors & wives I know seemed to be so bitter & held people at arms length. I would hear them say things like their trust had been broken so much by people that they themselves get tangled in the web of unforgiveness and their hearts get cold towards God’s people!

We have to remind ourselves that we can’t let broken trust keep us from trusting others! We have to learn to keep our confidence in God!

Things I have learned since Pastoring:

1.) People will betray you! Ask Jesus!

2.) All people are not bad people, but all people have been hurt by people! (Open book test: What do hurting people do to other people? You guessed it – Hurt People!)

3.) People will come & people will go! – People will not stay at your church forever – get over it!

4.) The only way to re-establish trust is to make yourself vulnerable! Be open & stay open to people!

I’m still learning, but I refuse to drink the poison of bitterness, unforgiveness, & lack of trust & wish the other person would die! I choose to Love! (Proverbs 10:12closeProverbs 10:12

You don’t have to admit it, but it’s something in a leader that wants to excel & be better than the rest of the pack…. we usually use terms like excellence to hide the fact that what we really want is Perfection (for everything in our church to be perfect, not just giving our best with what we have!)

I have tried to set a culture in my church where people would feel comfortable, not churched, not filled with a bunch of christianese, relevant, inspiring, & not controlling. I felt that this would cause everyone who came to the church to love it so much that they would never leave, however I have found that not to be the case. People still leave the church & I am always faced with the reality that my church & no other church are the PERFECT church & no matter the best of intentions, services, programs, or love shown people will bounce! I am learning to accept the fact that some people are called to the church for a season & some are called for a lifetime! Whatever the cause we continue to press on to reach more people with the transforming truth & relevant message of Jesus Christ!

I’m ready for change! I am convinced that the Church is the most powerful institution in the earth but most believers haven’t gotten the news yet! God has called us to bring renewed vision & hope to a dying world, but we spend so much time doing church that we have failed to be the church! I pray that we start to value our call to this world & seek (finding creative ways) to bring people back into a relationship with God & help people find their purpose! I’m tired of revivals, conferences, & concerts but I am ready for a REVOLUTION!
